As we get older, our skin tends to become drier. By producing a mild skin peel and thinning of the top layer of dead skin,alpha-hydroxy acids add to this drying effect, which may show as fine peeling and the skin may feel slightly rough to the touch. However, the skin does improve as it adjusts to the acid in the preparation, and this improvement is increased by using a good moisturizer, preferably one with a sunscreen of at least SPF 15.
When one first begins using an alpha-hydroxy preparation, some irritation may occur, particularly with those having very sensitive skin. Again, this is primarily because of the skin peel produced and usually can be eliminated by stopping the use of the preparation, beginning again after a day or two, always applying sparingly until the skin fully adjusts.
Alpha-hydroxy acid preparations won’t work for every skin problem. Common annoyances such as moles, fibromas (those fibrous bumps in the skin),and the brownish, waxy seborrheic keratoses, will not clear up nor be eliminated. For answers on how one might eliminate or lessen these unsightly signs of passing time, consult your dermatologist.
For all other conditions resulting from photoaging that we have discussed in this series of articles,it is much better to prevent the damage than it is to try to reverse it. Starting the use of a 10% glycolic acid preparation early may be very important, because the microscopic changes in the skin start as early as 10 to 15 years before they can be seen by yourself or your friends. It is apparent that proper care of your skin should be a lifetime commitment.
