Computer information and ideas for those who don’t speak computerese!
Here are a few more computer terms and descriptions that can help you communicate with your computer technician:
USB –stands for Universal Serial Bus. This is the type of port that can connect most new add-ons to your computer. For the most part,it has replaced separate ports for keyboards, mouses (or mice if you prefer),printers, etc. The connection is faster and you can conceivably install up to 128 of these devices on your computer (although this large a number would slow down your computer considerably).
Sound and Video Cards –Often these are integrated (or built into the motherboard). While convenient and less expensive,an integrated sound card or video card is usually not as powerful or flexible as the plug-in type. This is especially true of the video cards (particularly if you are looking for ultra-realistic gaming),or the sound card (if you are using your computer as a recording/production studio). Newer video cards also generally have the HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) port for connection to the new HD screens. This is also referred to as DVI (Digital Visual Interface) although the connectors are sometimes different. Check to be sure the connection you have is the same as your cable.
Network Cards –These are also generally included on newer motherboards. They are fine for standard speed connections through wires. Most new laptops have a wireless network interface included that allows them to connect to hot-spots (wireless networks) nearby. You can add this capability to older laptops and desktop computers as well. The higher speed “N”series networks that currently are becoming more popular may require that you buy new equipment, but are faster and have a better range (distance from transmitter).
Bluetooth –This is another type of wireless system that is usually used specifically for wireless keyboards and mouses,as well as things like headphone microphones, connecting PDAs (Personal Display Assistants –such as palm and blackberry planners and phones) and similar items. Infra-red transmitter/receivers have also been used for similar purposes.
Firewire –Another type of interface similar to USB. It is usually faster and can handle a larger amount of data at any given time than USB. It is often used to transfer information from a digital video camera or other data intensive device.
As always, keep backups of anything important. Stay safe and happy computing.
