What A Pain In The Neck – Literally… A Local Woman’s Experience

Debbie,65 of St. George, massages her own sore neck trying to rub out the nagging pain.   Lately she has felt a burning sensation travel from her neck to her right shoulder.  She’s worried that the burning is a nerve becoming damaged.  The last thing she wants is to be stuck with permanent nerve damage.  She booked herself for an hour deep tissue massage.  The massage felt great but no matter how deep they went she felt they were never as deep as the pain origin.  After discussing this with her massage therapist, the therapist recommended she see an orthopedist or a chiropractor to get diagnosed.

Trying to go the conservative route first,Debbie contacted her husband’s chiropractic doctor at Advanced Spine and Rehab.  She came in the next day for consultation and evaluation.  The chiropractor pulled up her x-rays on his computer previously taken at the hospital and read them together with Debbie.  She was diagnosed with mild “foraminal stenosis” in the neck.  It was explained to her that small bone spurs were interfering with the nerve where it exits the vertebra bones on the right side of the neck.  The good news was that this could be controlled by conservative measures.

Interested in undergoing pain relieving treatment,Debbie was introduced to a “cervical traction decompression” machine.  It was explained to her that the machine would gently and slowly stretch the neck so as to create functional space around the encroached nerve.  She was somewhat familiar with “decompression” treatment due to advertising in the media and was concerned about the additional costs on top of her insurance.  She was pleased to find out that she would not be charged anything above her normal co-pay.

Debbie initiated treatment and started feeling results after the second visit.  She looked forward to her visits because she would have zero pain while on the machine and the relief would maintain itself longer and longer after each visit until she experienced no more pain or burning any more and was subsequently released from care.
