Every once in awhile I will meet someone who will tell me that they would never go to a chiropractor because they “don’t believe in chiropractic.” This is an interesting statement when I hear it. At times I will respond with the question, “Do you believe in your auto body mechanic?” Because in a lot of ways we are not that different and there certainly requires no ‘belief’ system to benefit from either of their skill sets. Auto body mechanics work on the frame and structure of your car. Chiropractors are skilled experts for working on the structure and function of a machine much more complex than your car – your body.
I firmly believe that every citizen should have “their” chiropractor who they can call any time for a headache, neck pain, back pain, arm or leg injury.
Believe me, I understand that there are ‘fringe’ chiropractors that have questionable diagnostics and treatment plans. But just because you met with one chiropractor that didn’t help 10 years ago shouldn’t negate the entire profession that has thrived for over 100 years and helps millions of people every year. If you have a poor experience with an MD, I would imagine you would search for a new doctor instead of writing off the entire medical and pharmacologic industry for the rest of your life. So it should be with chiropractic.
I realize some of my colleagues have resorted to “Free Spinal Exams” and “Free Adjustments and Decompression Treatments” in order to attract new patients. I think this is an embarrassment that poorly reflects upon the valuable health services our profession can offer. Please remember that not all Chiropractors are the same. If you need spinal care but were hesitant to try a “bargain” Chiropractor, I urge you to try chiropractic within a spinal center to see what safe, comprehensive, quality spinal care is really about. The only good “bargain” you will ever find in health care is a good Chiropractor.
