Oh No! I Got A Letter!!… Facing A Tax Dilemma?

Issue 24.11

It’s that time again. Tax Professionals are in great demand. In recent days, there have been many letters and notices (in the thousands) mailed by The Internal Revenue Service, Utah Tax Commission and other government agencies to taxpayers (individuals & companies) and because of government expansion, an additional 16,000 IRS agents will be hired so there will be more mailings in the future.

Many of these letters are to taxpayers who have prepared their returns themselves by: “Free” Online, Discounted Services, had a friend prepare their return, had a student or a “Volunteer” or they have not filed a return for a given period of time.

The letters are generally a Demand for Payment of unpaid taxes, Levy or Lien Notices, Notices of Deficiency from not paying all of their taxes in the past, Letters in correcting problems with returns that were filed. There are almost always additional fees, penalties and interest assessed. And, some of the letters are caused by errors of government personnel or their computer systems or software.

In either circumstance, a response is required to resolve the matter. If you are comfortable in working with a bureaucrat yourself we commend you. But if you are like most in this country, it can be and most often is an overwhelming burden that sometimes turns into a nightmare and just doesn’t seem to end. The cost to fix the problem is almost always more than the Free or discounted fees paid at the time the return was filed.

Facing this type of dilemma? What to do?

Now is the time as we say, it’s time to pay The Piper. If you are in need of help, or know someone who does. Don’t encourage the problem to get worse by ignoring it and not doing anything. Call someone who knows how to help and get the matter solved.
