Washington Businesses Pioneer On

Issue 29.11

Back in the spring of 1998 we had a nice store in Las Vegas which was doing very well, called Country Comforts Furniture. We came to St. George just for a week end and fell in love with Washington City. It seemed almost impossible to up and move but the next thing I knew there we were bringing real wood furniture to the wonderful folks of Washington.

The people were warm, friendly and so receptive I called it La-La land, I felt welcome and safe and right at home.

Businesses in Washington struggled with the roads when Wal-Mart came in and when I-15 came in but it was all part of growing.

Then came the recession and I wrote an article for the Senior Sampler called “Failure is not an option”, saying let’s keep our money in Washington County, we can make it if we help each other, instead of spending money on items in other states, let’s stick together and keep our money local.

In March of 2009 I went in hospital for what I thought was a minor operation and almost died, Country Comforts Furniture almost folded and was closed for a while but in January 2011 Frederick and I decided to re-open our doors with a new name and a new start, we changed the name to “Comfort Design Furniture and Consignment.”

Now the roads are closed again and all the businesses on Telegraph Street are struggling more than any of us can describe but we are all survivors here in Utah and we can make it. Losing Nisson’s grocery store here on Telegraph was sad for all of us after all those years they had been in business, not to be able to stop in their store and say ‘hi’ is a loss. As for the rest of us on Telegraph Street let us count our blessings, we will survive, we are used to struggle.

Let’s tip our hats to the construction workers who are out there in 110 degrees, mud, dust and rain. They are doing a wonderful job and the end results are going to be awesome. We are sons and daughters of the pioneers, failure is not an option, in the end if we hang on our struggles will be worth it, Washington City will be so beautiful.
