What Is The Actual Cost Per Month?

Issue 34.11

In our experience as owners at theTedWarthenCenterfor Assisted Living one of the most important questions that potential residents and their families ask is “what is the price?”

Pricing is subjective in most cases because of several factors.  These factors can include:

Room size, type of facility and the level of care required, staffing to resident ratio, type of facility you or your loved one may need, and determining what type of personal needs are provided.

The living area can vary with each facility. You will need to determine does it come with a private bath or a communal “shower room”, size of rooms can vary.  For individuals who are more independent and would like more amenities, a larger facility may be a good choice to consider.  For individuals needing more assistance with needs, then a smaller facility may be a better choice.

Take the time to look at both small and large facilities, comparing apples to apples, and what the best fit will be for each individual.  When looking at different facilities, as what the caregiver to resident ratio is.  In the smaller facilities the ratio could be 1 CNA to 5-7 Residents.  A larger facility the ratio would be much higher.

Some facilities will use a point system which means the more assistance required, the higher the price will be above the base price.  This would vary on the number of ADL’s (Activities of Daily Living) required.  In other facilities everything will be included in the base price.  Again you will need to look at all the options and compare apples to apples.  The more you investigate the more informed you will be. Take notes on each facility asking key questions and compare your notes with what you feel would meet the most important needs for you or your loved one.
