Hearing, Like Vision, Is Very Significant To One’s Overall Well-Being

Issue 11.12

At times, it seems as if hearing is a second-rate sense to vision in our visually oriented modern society.  But there is nothing second rate about the ramifications of untreated hearing loss and the inability to clearly understand what others are trying to communicate.  Just as an Optometrist would recommend prescription glasses (or contact lenses) to help an individual see more clearly, hearing care professionals will recommend hearing devices and/or auditory counseling to help individuals hear and understand better in many difficult situations.

Many people with hearing loss delay getting help because they perceive themselves to be ‘too young’ for hearing loss; however, an estimated 65% of people with hearing loss are younger than retirement age.  This number is extremely important to keep in mind because studies have shown that early detection and treatment of hearing loss can literally transform the lives of the individual and his or her family members.

Left untreated, hearing loss can have many negative consequences that one would not regularly associate with hearing problems.  Those who struggle to understand may be subject to subtle or even overt discrimination because of their inability to keep up with the conversation or meeting.  This inability to stay actively engaged to ones surrounding can ultimately lead to frustration, anxiety, social isolation, depression, and recent studies are showing a correlation with dementia.

While close to 34 million people in the United States have hearing loss, the majority have not received treatment.  Yet extensive research demonstrates that treatment with modern hearing devices, listening enhancement programs, and auditory counseling brings measurable improvements in social, emotional, psychological, and physical well-being, for both patients and their families.

The good news is that, with treatment, those suffering even mild hearing loss can gain:

Greater effectiveness on the job and better earning power

More participation in group activities like church services, family gatherings, and social settings.

Improved interpersonal relationships, greater intimacy, and a better sense of control in their interactions.

The fact is that better hearing is a critical aspect of effective communication and can be summed up by reviewing a famous quote:

“Blindness separates us from things but deafness separates us from people.” –Helen Keller
