7 Most Common Misconceptions About Assisted Living

Issue 22.12

A difficult part of life is the fear of the unknown. This fear certainly applies to making the decision of moving yourself or a loved one into an assisted living community. Many people don’t really understand what life in an assisted living community is like. Instead they rely on pre-conceived ideas that have developed over time. Fortunately, these concerns can be overcome.  Below are the few of the most common misconceptions associated with assisted living.

1- I will lose my freedom.
Actually, most residents who live in assisted living situations find that they are enjoying more freedom than when they were living in their homes. Daily chores can become a thing of the past. No more housework, doing the bills, or cooking. If he or she were housebound or at the mercy of a friend or loved one to go anywhere, they can now go where and when they want by using the provided transportation. Many residents still drive and are welcome to come and go as they please.

2- I don’t want to live with a bunch of sick people. The typical assisted living resident is a senior citizen that has suffered a mild decline in their overall health. This can be caused by an injury, an illness, or simply because of aging. They may experience challenges to do certain daily functions such as bathing or dressing, or they’re not as sharp mentally as they used to be. However, most residents are not ill or bedridden.

3- I will lose my privacy. A lot of seniors are concerned about their privacy in an assisted living community. The Retreat at SunRiver has been designed to allow for maximum privacy of its residents while also promoting a friendly social atmosphere. The Retreat offers a large dining room, and gathering room for socializing and activities.  Residents who are looking for solitude can easily find it in the privacy of their own suite or apartment or in our private library… you may go to our website at http://www.sunriverassistedliving.com/assisted-living-resources/common-misconceptions to read the remainder of this article.
