Genealogy Corner… FamilySearch Keeps Changing

Issue 5.13

For those of you who may sometimes wonder “why do they keep changing the programs just when I start to get if figured out?” I thought you may enjoy the following post to the FHCNET mailing list recently:

“Trying to be tactful and non-confrontational, and all those other Virtues, allows me to offer up a parable:

Imagine if you will that you are the proverbial Little Old Lady who drives once a week to church. One bright, warm Sunday morning, you climb into your car, ignition key in hand … and find the ignition slot has moved. You sit there befuddled a moment, and then notice it /almost/ where it was. Sighing with relief, you start the car, but now the parking brake isn’t a pedal you push, but a lever you release. “R” is at the bottom of gears, not the top … You spend a couple more minutes but finally arrive at church. Getting home again is OK, once you remember the changes

The following Sunday it’s raining and windy. And the ignition slot has moved again, the parking brake is now a handle you pull, and “R” is in the middle of the gearbox. And each Sunday for the next month, you have to re-find all these things before you can go to church.

How often do you figure you’re going to keep driving to Church on Sunday?”

The reason FamilySearch keeps changing is to improve the system and make everything in the pipeline work together.  First they find the records, microfilm now digitize the records, then index the records, then arbitrate the differences, then place them online for searching, then link them as sources to our ancestors, and make all of this available for worldwide use in 10 languages all for free.  There is a lot more to it than that, and there are many other resources available such as books, training, blogs, support, etc.

Personally I like change, and it is no reason to give up, just a great reason to learn.
