What Is Independent Living?

Issue 11.13

Independent living is simply any housing arrangement that is designed exclusively for seniors, generally those aged 65 and over.

Independent living varies widely, from apartment-style living to freestanding homes.

In general, independent living is preferable to older adults who are looking for help with some of their basic living needs such as housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation, linen service and planned social activities.

The key difference between independent living and other senior housing options is the resident’s overall health and assistance needed in daily living activities.

If you or a loved one requires round-the-clock help with dressing, eating, and toileting, or requires regular medication assistance, other housing options such as assisted living may be a better fit.

Oftentimes independent living and assisted living occur under the same roof. This is the case with The Retreat at SunRiver St. George Assisted Living. We are a type II assisted living community which allows our residents to choose an independent living care package in the beginning of their stay followed by an assisted living care package as care needs advance with age.

We hope that you will ask our nursing staff for a free assessment of your needs to determine whether independent living is the right choice for you.  Please call us anytime at 435-216-3905 or check us out on the web at www.SunRiverAssisted Living.com.
