Dear ‘Do It Yourself’

Issue 19.13

Six weeks ago I asked Senior Sampler readers to ask me questions. Thank you to those who have called and emailed questions.  I again ask you to call or write me with questions about your cabinets, wood floors, and wood fixtures in your home.

As promised I have provided a new and wonderful picture.  Those of you who know me, or who have read my articles will appreciate the humor in that statement.  I could again apologize for my new picture, but I have embraced my ugliness.  I can only hope that the hours of primping, tanning, working out, waxing, and the use of professional photography have produced a photo that doesn’t scare women and children, and embarrass my family.

Dear Ben: I have 13 year old cabinets.  I want them painted.  Can I do it myself?

DEAR DO IT YOURSELF:  Yes.  Keep in mind painting cabinets is much different than painting walls.  All doors, hardware, drawers etc., must come off and be reinstalled with precision or those sink doors won’t close right.  Cabinets need a smooth finish.  Do not use rollers or brushes to paint cabinets.  You will need a Paint Sprayer.  Some products are available in aerosol and maybe a good option for a small room but can become expensive in a larger room.  You will need all the general painting supplies, tools, drop clothes, masking tape, etc.  Consult professionals at your Home Improvement store to get the right products and tools for the job.  Start small.  This is the best advice I can give you!  You may not realize the extensive time, strenuous labor, expense, mess and possibility of complete loss of cabinets when you start this project that looks quite simple.  Then again, you may be a natural!  A bathroom is a good place to get your wings.   I wish you luck!  Thanks for the great question.
