Issue 44.13

Dear Ben: What do you recommend for a new coat of finish on the wood in my home?

DEAR NEED A NEW WINTER COAT (OF WOOD FINISH):  I have one recommendation for interior wood recoating.   Water Based Polyurethane.  This is a clear, fast-drying finish that combines superior durability with the warmth and beauty of traditional polyurethane.  It is water-based, therefore it is lower in odor than traditional solvent-based polyurethanes and cleans up easily with warm water.  It protects and adds beauty to interior wood surfaces such as furniture, cabinets, floors and doors.

Polyurethane is harder and more resistant to abrasion than lacquer and other oil based finishes.  It is also cheap, easy to use.    Benefits of Water-based Polyurethanes also include a wide variety of sheens, including Gloss, Semi-Gloss, Satin and Flat.  They are easily applied with a good synthetic bristle brush, foam brush, lambswool applicator and microfiber pads.  Water-based Polyurethane is ideal for all interior wood surfaces including furniture, cabinets, floors, trim and doors.  Clean up is easy with warm water, you can recoat almost immediately, and dry times are generally within 24 hours so you are back in business quickly.

Thanks for the great question!
