Genealogy Corner… FamilySearch Updates

Issue 48.13

The next step to fully implement FamilySearch Family Tree on FamilySearch.org is to change new.familysearch.org to read-only status.  This milestone will occur in December 2013.  Users will still be able to view information on new.familysearch.org after the change, but users will no longer be able to edit or change information.

Users have many reasons to switch from new.familysearch.org to FamilySearch Family Tree.  They can: 1) Correct information about ancestors and relationships.

2) Find valuable records for any ancestor, right from the person page.

3) Add sources to ancestors with a few simple mouse clicks.

4) Add photos, documents, and stories to ancestors.

5) Print fan charts, pedigrees, and family group records.

Another consequence of this change should be the speed of response of the website at the FamilySearch Family Tree because it will no longer have to write to both applications.  So, if you are still resisting change and using new.familysearch.org, it’s time to switch to the Family Tree.

FamilySearch Indexing should have a new website coming online in the next little while.  FamilySearch will first update the page familysearch.org/indexing and provide more information on getting started, finding projects and getting help.  Plus they will share news on how we are doing and where help is needed.  Hint: They need more arbitrators!  This update will come sometime before the end of 2013 hopefully.  Then in 2014 the indexing program will be updated so that you don’t have to download anything or install a program anymore.  It will all be “cloud” based, meaning you can just log into the Internet, find the indexing site and work there.  That is good news for Mac users and those who have had trouble in the past downloading and installing the program.

Indexing is a stepping stone to get you started on family history.  FamilySearch finds that once people start indexing, they become familiar with the records and are able to learn to research on their own. So not only does indexing help others find their ancestors easier, it helps you as well.
