Presenting ‘Wood Creations’… Back To Basics

Issue 5.14

At the end of August, 2013 a new type of craft store opened in St. George – Wood Creations.  We locally manufacture wood craft kits and give you the opportunity to finish and customize these great decorations for your home.  These crafts are centered around home and family plus each holiday/season throughout the year.  We are focused on maintaining high quality, reasonable prices, and a wide selection.  We provide training classes, and in addition to a large selection of craft kits we also do custom orders.

Some background:

In 1980 I secured employment with SkyWest Airlines and my wife and I moved to St. George, close to her hometown of Cedar City.  Since that time, we have raised 5 children, and I enjoyed a great career with SkyWest, originally a locally owned airline.  My third son, Mike, got a mechanical engineering degree from Utah State University and went to work in the oil industry, being very gainfully employed by Weatherford in Casper, Wyoming.  My fourth son, Steve, earned a Master’s degree in accounting and was employed as an accountant for the Cedar Band Corporation (Cedar Band of Paiutes) in Cedar City.  We were all employed in businesses that required a great deal of our time and energy, and were successful by most measures – financial, recognition, responsibility, etc.  However, for each of us it seemed that the more we “progressed” the less satisfaction we found in our jobs.  Mike discovered Wood Creations (located in West Haven, Utah) through his father-in-law, and after careful research decided that opening a wood craft store in St. George under a franchise from Wood Creations was an ideal opportunity.  It would get him back to his home town, would give greater job satisfaction by actually producing a tangible product, and would allow him to have control over his financial future, based on his abilities, effort, and desires.  Mike teamed up with Steve and approached me about participating.  After a lengthy consideration (one half of a second) I stated, “I’m in”.  I retired from SkyWest, and we are now finding what it is like to really “live the dream”.
