Genealogy Corner… FamilySearch Accounts

Issue 49.14

People can call, email or do live chats for assistance with FamilySearch. There is a queue just for registration and log in, and it is one of the most frequently asked questions. Since everyone needs to be able to sign in to use FamilySearch and top preserve photos and family stories on FamilySearch.org, I will share the information this week. The accounts are free and easy to create.

The information you provide for a FamilySearch Account will be used only to give you access to FamilySearch.org and its records. If you already have an LDS Account, you can use that username and password to sign into FamilySearch.org. To register for a free account, go to FamilySearch.org. In the upper right corner, click Join For Free or Sign In, and click Create an Account. A registration form is displayed.

Enter your first and last name in the appropriate fields. Enter a username. Your username must be unique, contain letters or numbers but not special characters, and have no spaces. If you enter a username that is already being used, the system will prompt you to provide a different username.

Enter a password. Your password must be unique. It must be at least 8 characters long and should contain letters and numbers. You cannot have spaces in your password. Creating a passphrase (several words connected together) with a number is often easier to remember.

Provide a valid email address where you can receive an email to activate your account, or provide a mobile device phone number to have an activation code sent. One of those is required. Fill in the remaining information fields. If you are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you will be asked to provide your membership record number. You can get that number from your ward clerk.

Read the Rights and User Information and Privacy Policy of FamilySearch.org. If you agree to the terms and policies, click the I agree… box. Click Create an Account. FamilySearch.org sends an email to the email address you provided or a text to your phone. If FamilySearch.org displays a message about the information you provided, go back and change the information on the registration form.

Open the email and click the link to activate the account, or check for the text message and enter the activation code. Important: You must activate the account within 48 hours, or you will have to register again.

Next week we will learn to recover a forgotten username and reset the password.
