Questions About Moving Into Senior Care

Issue 20.15

1.  Do you or your loved one want to leave your home?

Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs), Independent Living Facilities (ILF), or Skilled Nursing Facilities, (SNF) all require seniors to move away from what they are used to and comfortable with.   Seniors who are at home often build up a support group around them of friends, neighbors, church, home, and things, leaving these things can be very difficult & traumatic at an older age.

2.  Do you or your loved one require all of the services of Assisted Living Facility?

ALFs, SNFs), and ILFs provide a huge list of services, some of which come for a single price.  People usually start by needing some help with transportation and errands, or shopping, or medication reminders.  Then possibly later they may need help with housekeeping, home maintenance, or cooking.  Still later, they may need help dressing, or bathing they could get all of this while remaining in their home.

3.  Do you or your loved one want to live in a shared community?

Most ALFs, ILFs, and SNF have at least some part of the community that is shared, ranging from shared bedrooms or bathrooms to shared dining facilities.  How much of the community that you are looking at is shared and how much do you want to share?  What is your privacy worth?

4.  Do you or your loved one have the funds for Assisted Living?

Nationwide, the average monthly cost of assisted living is approximately $4,677/mo, on top of this there are AL cart charges for showers, laundry, etc that can run as much as another $1600/mo or more.  Alzheimer’s and dementia care cost up to $1,600/mo additional. In-home assistance averages $1,500/month and starts at a lot less, it can provide whatever level of care YOU desire.

5.  What kind of care will you be getting?

What is the staff-to-resident ratio?  Most ALF’s or ILF’s have about a 1/7 to 1/12 staff-to-resident ratio. Most SNFs are 1/5 or 1/8 – this typically includes some supervisory staff.  What is the ratio at night?  The lower the second number of this ratio is, the better your service will be.  In-home Care typically provides a 1/1 or 1/2 ratio, typically providing a much higher level of care.
