What !s So Scary About Home Care?

Issue 33.15

My father told me a long time ago that it is often better to test the water in a river for temperature and depth, with series of small steps than to jump right in with a huge leap.  This advice has served me well in fly fishing, the Provo, Green, and San Juan Rivers over the years.

In many ways life is like fishing when trying something new wading in slowly so you can back out if needed is a great approach when it’s possible.

When it starts getting to the point where you are having difficulty taking care of yourself, your loved one, or your household, what may be needed is some small steps, where you remain in control, so you can backup if needed.

Home Care is a small step you can start with as little as 3 hours per week, and the Assessment to setup service should be FREE, though a refundable deposit may be required to start service.  With a good agency the people coming to help in your home will be screened, kind, hardworking, trained, insured, managed, and bonded.  You should also be able to back out at any time with a one day notice, or to wade further into the river of Home Care with a few days notice, as needed.  There should be no contracts locking you into months of service, and you should never pay more for service than you get.

Though getting Home Care is wading slowly in the shallow end of Senior Care, it can really get you out of Deep Water.

This was the case with one of our clients who hadn’t left her infirmed husband’s side in 3 years.  When we started care she was so tired she would just sleep for the 3 hours a week we came in.  Then she slept for 6-12 hours a week when we came in later she visited the store and other places.  We had the same caregiver with that couple for 2 years until the husband died in his home where he wanted to be with his wife at his side awake and alert.

So if you have some need for help at home consider taking the plunge into Home Care a small step in the shallow end of the river of Senior Care, you can always back out!
