Keeping Up To Speed With Medicare Open Enrollment

Issue 45.15

It’s that time of year again, no not the holidays… It’s Medicare open enrollment. Prepare yourself for piles of letters from Medicare Part D providers, supplement plans, HMO and PPO Advantage plans, and to sit thru the commercials begging for you to call and sign up today.

With so many programs to consider, it’s important you make educated decisions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. One caution I hear constantly from program representatives is to never assume that what was covered last year is covered this year.

Medicare now offers an annual wellness check. Unlike your yearly physical exam, this visit is designed to discuss with your Primary Care Provider questions or concerns you have regarding any potential health risks as well as to share you goals and wishes for your healthcare needs in the coming year. This would be an ideal time to ask questions about your DNR and other Advanced Directives concerns. Taking the opportunity to discuss what life saving or life prolonging medical interventions you do and do not want is essential. Making decisions for yourself so your loved ones won’t have to be burdened with making them for you is one of the best final gifts we can give them. Make sure to document your wishes and share those decisions with those who will be carrying them out.

End of life care is vitally important, that is why no matter what HMO or PPO Advantage plan you have when the time is right to receive Hospice Care services will be covered at 100%. You ALWAYS have the right to make your own decisions regarding your health care needs, this is never more important than as End of Life nears.
