Tinnitus

Issue 3.16

I recently had a 56 year old man come to see me with tinnitus (ringing and high pitched steady noise) in both ears. And while he had a known and documented moderate hearing loss, he stated that this has been going on for several years but as of recent it had become unbearable. He really was suffering with this and I could easily tell that it was taking over all aspects of his life…including his sleep.

After a thorough patient history and evaluation, including specialized tinnitus testing, we were able to locate what his ringing was, and why it was so bothersome. He, his wife and I were able to construct a personal rehabilitation plan, including Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. In this way we were able to help desensitize his awareness by way of his autonomic and limbic systems using his auditory pathway to better “blend” his bothersome tinnitus with the everyday sounds which are around him. It was a success! And while we were not able to “cure” him, he most certainly is now able to go about his day without recognizing that pesky annoyance.
