During this time of year sweet memories of walking into my family’s home and catching the smell of Douglas Fir burning in the wood stove come to my mind. The aroma would wash over you as the door opened signaling to your senses that you were home. Mother had tended to the fire all day and now it was your turn to tend to the evening duties of wood preparation. Bitter cold hands and toes would greet the next hour of chopping and stacking wood in the hopper at the back door. Aren’t memories great? That is why they are memories because they always seem sweeter after the years have dampened the pain.
