Genealogy Corner: Web Indexing

Issue 16.17

The new FamilySearch web indexing program will be rolling out throughout the remainder of this year. It has been released to Temple and Family History Consultants and leaders so far so they can become familiar with the tool and plan for the volunteers in their areas. Some of you who haven’t submitted an indexing batch in months may like this new program. The changes are making this program easier for everyone.

The new web indexing tool is for everyone. Youth and newer indexers will love the straight-forward layout and interaction of the tool, which has several new features. The tool now allows those with access to index by going to www.familysearch.org/indexing/my-indexing.

It is easy to learn how to use it because of the built-in training. You will click “Find Batches” and choose a project to get started. All volunteers will be able to see project progress as they choose where they would like to work. Among those that have tested this tool, youth and first time volunteers have particularly enjoyed the new interface. FamilySearch is making daily improvements for those who are more experienced.

Indexing plays a critical role in filling the Family Tree with hints so families can link the sources to their families. This is called fueling the find. It is making family history research a lot easier and more efficient. You will be able to index on any computer, laptop, or tablet that has access to the web. There will be no more downloading and installation of an indexing program. Since it is a web application, there is nothing to download. Just click a link and get started indexing right away.

The new system is much easier to learn and navigate. You can be a part of multiple groups or even create a group of your own. Group management and reporting features have been greatly improved. Once the link becomes public, anyone can use web indexing.

You can use the current program until it is retired sometime in 2018. Arbitration is still millions behind in the old program so arbitration is needed. Web Indexing is under constant development and will add the missing features to the new program over time. Throughout 2017, indexers are welcome to continue indexing in the current program while they prefer it. Indexers will be encouraged to index in the new program and give feedback on the features they miss most.
