Why You Shouldn’t Buy Hearing Aids From Us

Issue 17.17

We don’t think hearing aids are perfect.  Hearing aids cannot completely bring your natural hearing ability back– but they can come really close.  People come to our office and want to leave hearing like they are 18 again.  That is not a reality.  Over the last ten years, we have seen advancements that literally change the game.  Hearing aids are no longer large, whistling, sound amplifiers.  They are now tiny, quiet, technologically advanced creations with capability to remotely connect to television, phones, and mini microphones, making it possible for you to hear and understand in a way that was impossible to generations before us.

We are not a warehouse. You cannot shop for hearing aids at our office while sampling food or buying toilet paper, and we do not offer low service options. In our research we have found that success with hearing aids depends on quality care.  That means patients that buy their hearing aids from us should be able to visit our office at no cost to have their hearing aid cleaned, checked, and when necessary adjusted by a Doctor of Audiology.  You should be able to have your hearing aid repaired or replaced for at least 5 years.  Most warehouses will not repair or replace any hearing aid damages after 2 years.  While warehouses do sell hearing aid technology at low prices, it is important to weigh out the cost of initially paying less.  Our office does offer hearing aids at every price point.  Each hearing aid you purchase from us automatically comes with free lifetime service.  We have found that 80% of people that purchase hearing aids at a warehouse, do not purchase a second set there.  Therefore, purchasing from a warehouse is actually more expensive in the long run.

We play favorites.  Our Doctors of Audiology regularly research and test hearing aids from all manufacturers.  We talk with colleagues across the country, and most importantly we ask our patients.  We offer our patients the opportunity to test new hearing aid technology from many manufacturers. They then let us know how each device sounds in different listening situations like noisy restaurants, on the phone, in the car, and in groups.  We also ask them about comfort and appearance.  With this research in mind, we choose favorites.

We don’t offer free hearing tests.  There are several places you can receive a free hearing test in town.  Our office is not one of them. We are a Medicare provider, and we believe that accurate, thorough testing is a major success factor for wearing hearing aids.   Providing free hearing tests as a Medicare provider is a violation of Medicare rules and regulations. The irony in this situation is that most of our patients end up feeling like they received a free hearing test because most insurance companies cover comprehensive audiologic evaluations (hearing tests).  We have an insurance specialist at our office that can help you find out what is covered under your insurance plan.  What we can offer at no charge, is a free hearing consultation with one of our Doctors of Audiology to answer any questions or talk about a customized hearing treatment plan.
