Ed’s Up On City Council Issues… Seeking A Steady Hand Amongst The Challenges And Turmoil Of Unbounded Growth

Issue 39.17

My friends, as this year comes to its final month(s) of existence… In the hands of those YOU elected to represent the public’s interest, it is befitting that the destiny of SG City should remain in YOUR hands…..The voters, who will go to the polls (Nov. 7th) to vote for a mayor and two council members.  SG City finds itself in the midst of a very important and unique position….brought forward by the fact that Leadership plays a crucial role in the continued development of a city only half developed. All elements of growth are in play. Most notable in my mind is the fact that SG City Manager, last July signed his career ending contract to serve the citizens of SG for another year…..Or at a time of his choice within the life of the contract.  This, coupled with the results of this municipal election year is sure to identify and be a strong indicator of the direction SG City will take in the foreseeable future.

Folks, it’s not ONLY the decisions to be made on infrastructure issues, roads, electricity, water, traffic signals, building permits etc. that you hear every election year…..BUT…..the very important issue of increased demands placed upon city staff due to personnel shortages within critically needed services. This of course impacts the level of service citizens have come to want and EXPECT…..Not to mention the effects increased demands have upon city employees and city ability to recruit and hire. In short, I believe 2018 will be a monumental year of major significance…..Perhaps importing a philosophical change in how SG City is to be administered. This I believe highlights the importance of having informed and educated voters…..Who will by the force of their conviction be able to maintain the cultural/ethical and yes, moral values that constitutes the City of SG as we have come to know it.

We do not yet know who the man or woman may be that will replace our current city manager, whenever the time comes in 2018…..But, we do know that the time is fast approaching for inevitable changes to take place. We may find comfort in the fact that we are familiar with the character and values of those currently holding office. If not, take the time to learn as much as you can about all the candidates so that you can make an informed and educated choice when it comes time to vote this coming November. As for me, I will have soon have spent the last two years serving with each incumbent and over the years have become well acquainted and familiar with the other candidates. There is a time for appropriate change and adjustments to be made. However, I do not think it wise to changes horses in the middle of the stream. 2018 will find the city at crossroads requiring a Steady Hand in the implementation and administration of city business.

Look about you and the city as a whole. Take note of the balance that exists in the commercial, industrial and residential segments of the city. The core values that have made SG the great city that it is are intact. SG is a thriving and growing community as is evident by the expanding educational and medical services. Take time to learn of changes taking place at Dixie State University and Intermountain Health Care Facility. Look at the efforts being made to bring in High Technology and Higher Wages to SG labor market.

I have chosen this time to bring to your attention the above described conditions so that you may have this next month to prepare yourself to Vote on November 7, 2018. PLEASE KNOW YOUR VOTE COUNTS.

Thank you.  ED BACA
