Genealogy Corner… October is Family History Month

October is Family History Month in the United States. Here are a few ways to celebrate family history month. October 20 to 22 is the Worldwide Indexing Event 2017. You can register and learn more at FamilySearch.org/indexingevent2017 You are asked to index one batch at least during that weekend and help someone else do the same.

Other activities to celebrate are make plans to go to a genealogy conference, RootsTech is coming next spring. Visit a cemetery, take some photos, do some cleanup. Write down that family recipe or make a collection of family recipes to share. It is a great Christmas gift.

Send copies of scanned photos to a cousin. Make a timeline for an ancestor. Look for books that will help you with your family history. Transcribe a document. Scan photos, Start a family history blog. Interview a relative. See what events are happening at your local FamilySearch Center. Check out what’s new on FamilySearch.org. They updated the interface last week and make some great changes to make it easier for you.

Review your notes about an ancestor. Work on a scrapbook. Backup your data. Share a story. Add memories to FamilySearch.org. Record a story, add audio to FamilySearch.org. Label photos and protect them. Recent storms remind us of the importance of taking care of our family heirlooms and photos. Protect your family history.

Hopefully you can have fun celebrating Family History Month. However you choose to celebrate, you can make some new connections and new discoveries by trying some of the ideas above.
