Truths And Myths Of “Spinal Decompression Therapy”… Is It Worth The Investment?

petersonIssue 9.10

Many people with ailing back problems have stopped to ask me what my opinion is of the ubiquitously advertised “Spinal Decompression Therapy.”  For those who are not familiar with this machine, allow me to introduce it to you.  Decompression (most widely advertised as the DRX 9000) is a specialized traction table designed to relieve disc and joint pain in the spine.  A patient will typically be lying on his or her back with a strap wrapped around the waist allowing the machine to gently stretch the spine up and down.  The patient typically experiences no pain while undergoing treatment which commonly lasts 10-20 minutes.

Does It Work?

Yes, it does work if used correctly for the right condition.  There are over one hundred conditions that can cause back pain.  Decompression can be successful for specific back problems (like degenerative joint disease, disc injuries, and others).

Does It Work For Everyone?

No.  The machine does not replace the doctor.  It is only a treatment avenue.  All patients are first evaluated and then prescribed the best therapy, which may or may not include decompression therapy.  I would estimate that less than 15% of new patients that we see will ever experience decompression in our office because other treatments may work better for them.

How Much Is Too Much To Pay For Decompression?

Because of the office expense of the machine, the good success rates, and novelty of the technology, many clinics charge large amounts above insurance coverage (which may reach multiple $1000’s).  Our philosophy is based on the care of the patient primarily.  We do NOT charge any amount over standard insurance coverage for a chiropractic visit when undergoing decompression therapy at our facility.  Our cash price is also extremely affordable.

Do You Have The Drx 9000?

No, we utilize a decompression brand named the Triton DTS.  No matter what sales pitch you hear, all decompression units have the very same FDA status, with all of them being under the same product code, regulatory class, regulation number, and regulation name.  The extra investment will not give you a higher success rate.

Advanced Spine & Rehab is an integrated chiropractic clinic specializing in treating senior patients with conservative therapy. A large portion of their base includes satisfied Medicare patients. If you have any questions about decompression therapy or would like to schedule a free consultation call us at 435-656-3266. www.StGeorgePainRelief.com

Health Tips For Golfers… Prevention Is Key To Back Pain

petersonIssue 5.10

Many avid golfers contort their bodies into oddly twisted postures, generating a great deal of torque.  Couple this motion with a bent-over stance, repeat 120 times over three or four hours, add the fatigue that comes with several miles of walking, and you’ve got a good workout – and a recipe for potential lower-back trouble.

Most golfers go until they get hurt, then look for help.  Back pain is a warning sign that there is an underlying problem responsible for a symptom that will likely get worse.  Doctors of chiropractic look for the cause of the symptom and help reduce the likelihood of future injury.

If you take the chiropractic approach, you’re in good company.  Tiger Woods says that lifting weights and visiting his chiropractor regularly have made him a better golfer.  I suggest these simple measures to help you avoid back pain or injury and improve your game:

Purchase equipment that fits.  Don’t try to adapt your swing to the wrong clubs.

If you show some signs of arthritis in the hands, consider a larger, more specialized grip for added safety and performance.

Take lessons.  Learning proper swing technique is critical.

Avoid metal spikes.  They increase stress on the back.  Soft shoes or soft spikes allow for greater motion.

Warm up before each round. Take a brisk walk to get blood flowing to the muscles; then do a set of stretches.

Pull, don’t carry, your golf bag.  If you prefer to ride in a cart, alternate riding and walking every other hole – bouncing around in a cart can also be hard on the spine.  Keep your entire body involved.  Every third hole, take a few practice swings with the opposite hand to keep your muscles balanced and even out stress on the back.  Take the “drop.”  One bad swing – striking a root or a rock with your club – can damage a wrist.  If unsure whether you can get a clean swing, take the drop.

Doctors at Advanced Spine and Rehabilitation have specialized training in sports medicine and can provide options for golfers with back pain as well as other health concerns, such as shoulder, knee, arm and wrist pain that could affect your game.  A large portion of their base includes satisfied Medicare patients. Running Through The Senior Games… One Athlete’s Experience With Foot Pain

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

petersonIssue 50.09

Jim J. of Mesquite, NV was excited to participate in the Senior Games of St. George this past year.  He had signed up for multiple running and cycling events.  Having trained for marathons for many years, he felt very competitive in his age division.  Unfortunately, on one of his first races he felt extremely sharp pain suddenly occur in his left heel.  He thought for sure that he had a stress fracture and would not be able to compete any further.

Jim called up his sports chiropractor at Advanced Spine and Rehab and was able to be evaluated that day.  Dr. Peterson did some preliminary tests and thought it was most likely not fractured but was plantar fasciitis.  To be certain, he called in an appointment for Jim to be x-rayed by a podiatrist across the street.  After taking x-rays and performing other tests, the podiatrist diagnosed the condition as plantar fascitis.  The patient was referred back to Dr. Peterson for follow up physical therapy.

Plantar fasciitis is a painful injury to the bottom of the foot most commonly felt on the bottom of the heel.  It is very common in runners but is often felt in non-athletes.  Pain from plantar fasciitis is typically worse in the morning, especially with the first few steps out of bed.  It can be a chronic syndrome that lasts for many years especially if never correctly treated.

With some conservative sports medicine techniques, Jim was treated immediately.  He was able to compete in all of the events he had originally signed up for without worsening his condition.  Following the Senior Games, Jim came in for treatment 5 times over 2 months and is now running marathons again.  Treatment consisted of ultrasound, Graston technique, massage, stretching, exercises, and Kinesio Taping Method.

Jim reported, “I was able to get better with Dr. Peterson’s treatment without any injections into my foot.  I am a 62-year-old athlete who has logged over 92,000 miles running since 1982.”

“As a health care provider for over 30 years, I have associated with many health care professionals.  I recognize in Dr. Peterson unique knowledge, skills and techniques, patient rapport, and professionalism that set him apart as the premier sports injury recovery professional in the region.”

Is Arthritis Always Painful?… A Local Woman’s Experience

Friday, November 6th, 2009

petersonIssue 45.09

A 56 year old lady name Sue had just started eating better and walking more.  She was walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day.  After her second week into her new routine, she noticed some slight tightness in her low back and right hip.  She didn’t think much of it until trying to get up after gardening one morning.  She felt some sudden tightness and pain.  She decided to take some Aspirin and tried to adjust to the discomfort.  Later that afternoon the pain started coming back.  This time it felt like it was traveling down the back of her thigh.  The annoying pain just wasn’t getting better.  After five days, Sue was worried that this was the beginning of a lifelong relationship with arthritis.

She went to her primary physician who took x-rays of her hip and back.  He said there was some mild to moderate arthritis.  He prescribed some medication and told her to rest.  Three weeks later the pain was still persistent.  One of her friends recommended seeing her chiropractic doctor.  She gave them a call and they were able to get her in the same day.  The doctor looked at her x-rays and performed an in depth exam of her back and legs.  She was relieved when the doctor told her there was a solution.  He diagnosed her condition as Piriformis Syndrome.  He explained that although some arthritis was present, that probably wasn’t what was causing the pain since the arthritis was most likely there more than a month ago when she had no pain.  She was treated with a light massage, stretches, and some other therapies to help with the spasms and pain.  After a few follow-up visits, she was completely pain free.  She quickly returned to her walking routine and now walks 60 minutes a day.

Piriformis syndrome is a common condition with geriatric patients.  It occurs when a small muscle in the hip area, called the piriformis, is irritated.  The muscle goes into spasm and can sometimes irritate the sciatic nerve resulting in pain down the leg.  Sue’s case is pretty common.  Arthritis isn’t always painful.  If that was the case, every single one of us over the age of 40 would have arthritic pain.  That just isn’t the case.  Chiropractic therapy is an excellent option for relieving arthritic pain or other sprains or strains.

Advanced Spine & Rehab is a chiropractic clinic in town specializing in treating senior patients with conservative therapy. Their goal is to get to the root of the problem and get you better as soon as possible. You will find a relaxed, gentle, pressure free atmosphere. The also accept Medicare. Relief After 40 Years… An Interview With a Local Man About Neck Pain

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

petersonIssue 43.09

This article is an interview with an actual neck pain patient from St. George.  John W., age 73, had neck pain ever since a car accident in 1963.  He had been to many different doctors where he found only temporary relief.  “In those 40 years I have found the most relief after visiting Advanced Spine & Rehab,” he said.

How did you feel before coming into AS&R?

Ever since the accident I have had neck pain and stiffness.  My range of motion had become very limited.  The pain and muscle spasms would randomly come on after simple movements like turning my head.  I would rate my pain at 7/10.  It was very frustrating.

What kind of care had you previously received?

I had received previous chiropractic care, diathermy, acupressure, and decompression.  They all seemed to help, but the relief was always temporary.

How was treatment at this clinic different?

I previously found that chiropractic care and decompression helped me the most.  AS&R offered a similar treatment but integrated it with neck exercises on the Multi-Cervical Unit.  I feel that really helped.  Instead of the pain coming back, I felt the pain gradually decrease.

How do you feel now?

This has been the best total relief I have experienced in the last 40 years.  I used to notice popping and crunching sounds in my neck when I moved around.  I now don’t hear that at all.  I feel my range of motion is back to normal for my age.  I have very few spasms.  I am able to check my blind spot while driving.  Previously I had to depend on the rear view mirror exclusively.

How is this clinic different than others you’ve been to?

The clinic here is more advanced than I have seen with other providers.  The doctors and staff are very caring.  The experience was more fun than a usual doctor visit.  You look forward to coming in for treatment.  I also felt the doctors and staff had a better handle on my insurance benefits.  I’m glad I made the decision to visit this clinic.

What A Pain In The Neck – Literally… A Local Woman’s Experience

Friday, May 15th, 2009

petersonIssue 21.09

Debbie, 65 of St. George, massages her own sore neck trying to rub out the nagging pain.   Lately she has felt a burning sensation travel from her neck to her right shoulder.  She’s worried that the burning is a nerve becoming damaged.  The last thing she wants is to be stuck with permanent nerve damage.  She booked herself for an hour deep tissue massage.  The massage felt great but no matter how deep they went she felt they were never as deep as the pain origin.  After discussing this with her massage therapist, the therapist recommended she see an orthopedist or a chiropractor to get diagnosed.

Trying to go the conservative route first, Debbie contacted her husband’s chiropractic doctor at Advanced Spine and Rehab.  She came in the next day for consultation and evaluation.  The chiropractor pulled up her x-rays on his computer previously taken at the hospital and read them together with Debbie.  She was diagnosed with mild “foraminal stenosis” in the neck.  It was explained to her that small bone spurs were interfering with the nerve where it exits the vertebra bones on the right side of the neck.  The good news was that this could be controlled by conservative measures.

Interested in undergoing pain relieving treatment, Debbie was introduced to a “cervical traction decompression” machine.  It was explained to her that the machine would gently and slowly stretch the neck so as to create functional space around the encroached nerve.  She was somewhat familiar with “decompression” treatment due to advertising in the media and was concerned about the additional costs on top of her insurance.  She was pleased to find out that she would not be charged anything above her normal co-pay.

Debbie initiated treatment and started feeling results after the second visit.  She looked forward to her visits because she would have zero pain while on the machine and the relief would maintain itself longer and longer after each visit until she experienced no more pain or burning any more and was subsequently released from care.

Neck Pain Sufferers Have New Options

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Does this sound like you?  “I wake up, and I can barely move my neck far enough to look at the clock.  After 10 minutes, it loosens up, but I still have pain aching into my neck and shoulder.  Everything I do to fix the pain makes me feel better but only temporarily.  Pills will help as long as I keep taking them every 3 hours for the rest of my life.  No thank you.  Massage will help for a day.  Chiropractic will help for a week, but then the pain comes back.  I tried physical therapy and alternative medicine with the same results.  I’ve had injections, which unfortunately didn’t last very long either.  I’m looking for something new!”

St. George’s spine clinic is excited to announce new technology for neck pain sufferers.  Most people don’t realize that they have lost strength in their neck due to previous neck injuries, car accidents, surgeries, and years of wear and tear.  Losing strength in the neck leads to many problems such as intense pain, headaches, and shoulder or arm symptoms.  A new machine called the Multi-Cervical Unit enables doctors, with the aid of a computer, to evaluate the neck and pinpoint precise areas of weakness for therapy.  The therapy follows American Medical Association standards and is proven to restore long-lasting range of motion and relief.

Advanced Spine and Rehabilitation is the first and only clinic in Utah to have this innovative technology.  Individuals suitable for this therapy include those with previous whiplash injuries and acute or chronic neck pain.  “With a computer, we test the strength and motion of the neck muscles, and from that determine if the individual does or does not have cervical weakness.  We use the data generated from the computer to design an individualized strengthening program for the patient.”  No referral is necessary, and no extra out-of-pocket expense is required above Medicare and insurance coverage.  Call us if you have any questions at 435-656-3266, or visit our website www.StGeorgePainRelief.com for more info and videos about how the Multi-Cervical Unit can help you.

When Does Sitting Relieve Back Pain?

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Ben Jones, 69 of St. George, was an avid tennis player.  Randomly, during one of his matches, without any injury or provocation, his low back starting feeling extra stiff.  The first 15 minutes of the morning were the worst for him.  Then stiffness started feeling like pain.  Ben continued to play tennis but was bothered that his back was getting worse.  He finally went to his doctor who told him that he had arthritis but it wasn’t severe enough for back surgery.  Feeling secure that he had nothing serious, Ben continued to be as active as possible.

Unfortunately, after four months, things had not gotten better.  When he walked, the pain would randomly start giving him trouble.  Oddly enough, he could make the pain completely disappear when he sat down or leaned forward on something.  When standing started causing pain into the back of his thighs, Ben started looking for other treatment options.

After searching on-line about a local spine clinic, Ben made an appointment to ask the opinion of their chiropractic doctor.  After a thorough history and spinal exam, he was told that he had the beginnings of Spinal Canal Stenosis.  Ben was surprised to learn that this condition is extremely common in those above 60 and is treated with success very frequently at the clinic.  After a series of painless treatments, Ben was playing tennis and walking again with no pain.

Dr. Craig Peterson reports, “In many mild and moderate cases of stenosis, non-invasive conservative care can help lessen pain and discomfort and allow the patient to keep a reasonable lifestyle.  Techniques involving distraction and mobilization may be helpful.  Home exercises are also a major part of the conservative treatment program.  Ultimately, stenosis is a chronic condition that cannot be “cured,” but it often can be improved, and improvement can be maintained with home care over the long term.  Patients can work with a health care provider, such as a doctor of chiropractic, to reduce symptoms and improve their quality of life.”
