‘Activities Of Daily Living’

Issue 31.12

There may come a time in a person’s life when they need assistance in what is called ‘Activities of Daily Living”. There may be a time when that person needs a little more assistance with showering, dressing, toileting or incontinent care, managing their medications correctly, increased forgetfulness or confusion, and safety concerns. An assisted living is an option for quality care and peace of mind.

When you are looking for an assisted living here are a few things to look for.  First you will need to compare apples to apples.  This will include the following points:  What is the actual cost per month – the base rate, are there any add-ons and how do they work.  Is it a flat fee or is it a point system.  Find out what your bottom line is per month. Is it a month to month lease or is it for a specific time period.  What is the overall philosophy of the owners of the assisted living – is it a local business or a large corporation, due the owners have experience in the medical field and are they available to you and your family.  What is the ratio for each CNA to the number of residents.  Are the meals approved by a registered dietician and made from scratch or are they pre-packaged. Can the meals be adapted to a special diet.  Is there a cook or does the caregiver do the cooking. What happens when you come into an assisted living independent and healthy and your health declines are you required to move? We will have additional articles going over each of the above points.
