Geek Speak… Protect Your Tablet, Phone Or Portable

Issue 12.13

Tablet computers and related technology such as smart phones and portable smaller laptops are becoming more the norm for many computer users. The flexibility and ease of use are making them much more popular and affordable than even a couple of years ago. They do have one basic drawback – they get broken easily.

Because people carry them around all the time and use them in uncontrolled settings, the chance for them to be dropped, yanked off a desk when the cord is tripped over, or having something set on them that crushes or breaks them is much higher than a desktop computer that is used in the same controlled space all the time. The most common damage is to the screen, and since they are usually “touch” screens, they are not just a piece of glass that has to be replaced. Replacement costs including labor will usually run from around $70 for the Ipod or smart phones up to as much as $200 or more for some of the higher end tablets.

There are a couple of ways to protect yourself from these high costs. The first is to buy an accidental damage insurance plan. This typically covers everything from breaking the screen to dropping it in the toilet (which has happened to family members) to losing the product or having it stolen. Cost of coverage is usually based on the retail value of the item and the more expensive ones usually have a deductible that you must pay if something happens. The deductible can run $50 to $100, but can save you quite a bit even at that. Replacement can cost $500-$700 on some models.

The other approach is to take steps to protect the unit from loss or damage yourself. While not always successful, you can reduce the likelihood of suffering loss significantly with a few choices. First, it is always a good idea to get a carrying case for your product. These can be hard shells that absorb most shocks to rubberized cushioning shells and vinyl or leather binders that you put the item in to protect it. Prices typically run $10-$40 for small items such as Ipods and smartphones and $30-$100 for tablets, Ipads and other larger units. It seems like a lot to pay until you have to repair one.

Other things you will want to be careful of include charging your electronics in a protected space being sure cords or cables are not run where they can be tripped over or snagged, and not carrying them in loose pockets where they can easily fall out when bending over – especially over toilets and sinks. Many people also purchase a waterproof cover or plastic protectors for the touch screen. Others also have their name and address engraved on the item to discourage theft or help police retrieve the item if it is stolen or lost.

As with other computers, it is important to be sure your data, pictures and other information are backed up, even with phones and tablets since they can fail or be lost. So, just like with your desktop, always back up anything important to you.
