Genealogy Corner… Shanna Retires After 9 Years

Issue 45.17

Shanna, before we get into the genealogy part of this column, I want to publicly thank you for all you have done to help budding genealogists blossom over these many years.  I remember when I started working at the Family History Center, just west of the Temple; I would read your column and think I knew something (that hasn’t changed much).  Most of the other missionaries were seniors in denial, not believing themselves old enough to read the Senior Sampler.  But today’s seniors have no such hang-ups, and your name is heard often in family history discussions.  You have been my major source for what’s new and exciting in the genealogical world, you will be missed.

They say that wine improves with age. That can also be said about FamilySearch family tree. Feedback from users and inspired leadership continually seek to improve this ever user-friendly program. FamilySearch really listens to your voice, you can access the feedback link at the bottom of the family search family tree pages, you are given the opportunity of leaving a suggestion or a compliment, or to address a problem you have with the site.  Change is hard for some as witnessed by the elimination of the ‘pick arrows’ to the right of Tree and Person, which has been replaced by the Recents tab.  Recents shows the last fifty persons you have worked on, and is a quick link to your person page, also to add an unconnected person this is the tab to click.  Recents looks identical to the previous drop downs from the above mentioned pick arrows.  Some hate the change but the majority have accepted and embraced the new tab.  Users have asked if it is possible to remove names from this list of names, Family search has listened and expects to roll out this feature by the end of the year.  Two features have returned to the landscape view, the first is the home icon, which looks like a house silhouette; this will change the focus person to the starting person on the account, based on the account settings.  The Re-Center Icon, which looks like a target, will put the zoom back to default, and put the focus person in the middle of the page, it will also collapse all the expanded lines.  Several updates have occurred and are in process for mobiles, Memories has been updated to support albums, archive and recently deleted, and the navigation has also been updated. Note: the iOS app will NOT support iOS 9 any longer, users with iOS 9 can still use the previous version of 2.X, or they can update their device if supported.
