Genealogy Corner… Newer FamilySearch – Part 3

Issue 50.10

The updated version of www.familysearch.org has a few changes we will need to get used to.  One of those changes is with the Pedigree Resource File.  The Pedigree Resource File (PRF) is a computer file that contains names; family relationships; and birth, marriage, and death information for millions of people.  The PRF was originally published on compact disc and then DVD.

When the Pedigree Resource File is added to the newer version of familysearch.org, the information will appear as it was originally submitted and is not merged with information submitted by others. The following changes will also be made:

1)                  FamilySearch.org will contain all submissions made as of the date when the new version of the website is released.  New submissions will temporarily be suspended but will resume soon.

2)                  You will be able to view only an individual’s record. You will not be able to display pedigrees or family group records. These features will be added in the future.

3)                  You will not be able to download the information as a GEDCOM file.

4)                  The data will be shown as individual submissions. Submissions by the same contributor are not combined.

5)                  Sources and notes will be displayed.

6)                  Multimedia links will not be displayed.

The Family History Library Catalog also changes in the newest version of familysearch.org.  The Family History Library Catalog describes the records available at the Family History Library. The catalog provides a guide to family histories; birth, marriage, and death records; census records; church registers; and many other records that may contain genealogical information. These records may be in a book, on a microfiche or microfilm, or online. Most microfilm and microfiche records can be sent to Family History Centers. The catalog is available on the Internet. The changes include 1) If an item that is described in the catalog is available online, the catalog entry contains a link to where you can see it online. This includes both records and scanned books.  2) The catalog uses the same search feature as the rest of the FamilySearch website. This gives you the ability to narrow searches and filter search results by record type, date, place, and so forth. You can also search the entire site, including the catalog, at once. 3) The catalog is updated online.
