Seniors – Beating The Holiday Blues…Tips To Help Make Your Holidays More Enjoyable

Issue 50.10

Once again the Holidays are upon us, which means it’s time again for festive dinners with the ones you love, exchanging gifts, sharing memories ……… and for most — a time of joy.  But for many the Holiday season can be a source of the blues – especially for those that have lost loved ones, are battling health challenges, or have concerns about finances.  Here are some tips to help make your Holidays more enjoyable and prevent the seasonal blues:

·                     Stay Active – Attend get-togethers, religious programs or services, or special Holiday events such as plays or musical programs.  As a suggestion — the St. George Tabernacle is hosting free Christmas Programs just about every night in December.

·                     Volunteer – Helping others is a wonderful way to fill your spirit with good feelings.   Many churches or civic groups would welcome any time that you can donate to them.

·                     Be financially responsible – Avoid overspending and the regret you will feel for months after the Holidays.

·                     Embrace the present – You can relive some of the memories from your past but try not to dwell too much on the “good old days”.   Life does bring changes and you still have more memories to make.

·                     Watch your diet – Diets tend to get worse around the Holidays as some people eat more starches in a misguided attempt to feel better.  Eat a healthy diet, drink a lot of water, and remember everything in moderation.

·                     Stay on the “sunny side” – Make time for activities that increase your exposure to the sun, which we have an abundance of here in St. George!

·                     Forgive – Forgiveness will help heal any broken spirit.  Even forgive those that you love to hate & you will feel a huge weight lifted off your back.

·                     Be kind to yourself – Allow some time to do the things that YOU truly Enjoy!

Finally, remember the spirit of the Holidays – however great or small there are always things in your life to be celebrated.  And as the year draws to a close, keep in mind the importance of giving of ourselves to others.   Happy Holidays from our BeeHive Family to yours!!
