Genealogy Corner… Learning Opportunities

Issue 4.11

A free family history conference, Genealogy Now, is being held Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the LDS Meetinghouse on 550 East 700 South in St. George, Utah.  It begins at 10:00 a.m. and goes until 5:00 p.m. that day.  The keynote speaker will be Utah’s former Governor Olene Walker.  There will be presentations by Family History Expos, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP), The Sons of the Utah Pioneers (SUP) and LDS Historic Sites.  This is being sponsored by the St. George Family History Center and you can obtain more information by calling them at 435-673-4591 or visiting their web site at www.FamilyHistoryCenter.org.

Classes will include Getting Started, New FamilySearch, FamilySearch Indexing, Ancestry.com; File Organization, Photo Editing, Google Earth, Free Websites, Cemetery Search, Ancestral Quest, Family Insight, Legacy Family Tree, RootsMagic and classes for Family History Consultants.  It sounds like a great opportunity to sharpen your genealogy skills for free.

Again in February, the annual Family History Expo will be held at the Dixie Center in St. George.  You can register online at http://fhexpos.com/.  The fun begins on Friday, February 25, at 8:00 a.m. with the keynote speaker, Glenn Rawson, and goes through Saturday, February 26.  You can also call 801-829-3295 to register by telephone.  Registration for the St. George Family History Expo is $65.00 if you register early, or at the door it is $75.00 for both days.  One day registration is available for $40.00.  They will let you attend classes for $12.00 per class, at the door.

At the Family History Expo you could hear from M. Bridget Cook, a national bestselling author speaking on “Handling and Healing the Skeletons in Your Genealogical Closet.”  You can also hear from FamilySearch Staff, the Ancestry Insider blogger, Gaylon Findlay creator of Ancestral Quest, many accredited genealogists and Geoff Rasmussen of Legacy Family Tree.  Holly Hansen does a great job of planning and carrying out many Family History Expos across the country with St. George being the original expo.

This conference also includes instruction particularly designed for LDS Ward Family History Consultants where they can learn about the resources available to help them and priesthood leaders be successful.  An exhibit hall will also be open with vendors, books, software and genealogical products.  The exhibit hall is open to the public both days from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
