Don’t Ignore Your Wood Floor

Issue 34.11

Along with a hardwood floor comes the responsibility of keeping it clean. The better care you take of your floor, the longer your floor will maintain its original beauty.  As with any wood product. Simple, regular cleaning and maintenance prevents large and costly repairs.

Here are a few simple steps to help your floor.

a Add Floor Mats and Rugs. By placing a floor mat at each entryway and encouraging family and guests to wipe their feet, the majority of dirt and grime will remain on the mat. Also put a floor mat or rug in any area where water could be splashed; for example near the kitchen sink.  Floor Mat Warning: rubber-backed or non-ventilated floor mats or rugs can damage your floor. Instead use floor mats or rugs made especially for hardwood floors and be sure to shake them out regularly.

b Sweep your floor regularly.

c Vacuum your floor without a beater bar.  We don’t want a high speed brush attacking the floor.

d Cover Furniture and Table Legs with flannel protectors.

e Shade.  Wood just becomes faded and aged by sunlight.  Minimize this by using window coverings to protect your floor from direct sunlight.  Also rearrange rugs and furniture often, allowing your floor to “age” evenly from light.

Deeper cleaning varies by the type of flooring you have.  Pre-Finished floors have different finishes than “finished in place” floors and are inherently not smooth, you may even have grooves at each individual board to clean.  Know which type of floor you have and consult an expert when buying cleaning products.  (At Nhance we have a wonderful wood floor cleaning kit for all types of wood floors.)  Keep water to a minimum when cleaning, water is rarely a woods’ friend; and will cause wood to expand, crack, and splinter.  Do not use a Steam Cleaner for Deep Cleaning wood floors.

Get Professional Help. If cleaning isn’t giving you the look you need, it’s time to consider getting help.  This isn’t as scary as it sounds. You don’t have to be moved out of your house for days while a wood sanding dust storm and harsh chemicals consume your home.  Thanks to new products and techniques a No Dust. No Odor.
