Tis the Season!

Issue 46.11

Tis the season!  It seems that everyone prefaces just about everything with “’tis the season” this time of year… tis the season to shop, tis the season to wrap gifts, tis the season to celebrate, tis the season to be thankful, and tis the season for family.  November and December brings out all that is good in the world; Tis the season for all of us to be a little more giving, a little more understanding, and a little less involved in our everyday life problems.

As I was deciding what to write for this article with turkey and stuffing on my mind and Christmas music in the background, I thought I would refresh on some quick cabinet care tips. I’ve had a lot of response and additional questions from one of the first articles I wrote with day to day tips on cleaning and caring for your cabinets.  During this season it seems everyone wants to freshen things up for the Holidays and make it to New Year to start that home remodel project these tips can do just that.

Quick Cabinet Care Tips

1 Wipe cabinets clean with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.

2. To remove grease and oil, use a wet sponge with mild soapy water. Follow this with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue. Wipe dry with a clean towel.

3. Do not use harsh cleaning fluids (Fantastic, Windex, 409, ammonia, Clorox, etc.). These can harm finishes.

4. Use a soft cloth, Avoid abrasive cloths and cleaners (i.e. Comet Cleanser, SOS pad, etc.) as they can cause scratches in the finish.

5. Furniture waxes, lemon oils and polishes vary in composition and are not recommended, since some of them may damage the finish and leave a silicone residue. They are typically not necessary if the above guidelines are followed.

6. Cabinet finishes tend to age more in hot, humid rooms and in areas that surround sinks, due to water that is splashed on the finish.  Give your sink and cabinets next to dishwashers extra attention.

7. Don’t overload drawers and Lazy Susans.  This will shorten the life of functioning hardware and cause costly repairs.
