Genealogy Corner… 1000 Memories

Issue 1.12

While beta testing a new application that will be added to www.familysearch.org  (The Family Tree which will move most of the capabilities currently at new.familysearch.org) I found that cannot currently upload an image from my computer for use as a source.  This means in order to link sources that I have that are not found online yet, I need to be able to upload scanned images of my documents and place them somewhere online to be able to provide an internet link to them.

FamilySearch has several certified sites that will work, so I investigated many of them to see which one I would use.  One of those is 1000memories.com and what I thought interesting about this company was this paragraph:

“We take the trust you place in us very seriously and we are doing everything we can to make sure that 1000memories is as close to permanent as anything that has ever existed. We want to make sure that your photos, stories and memories will be here not just for your children or your children’s children but for all future generations. We have taken several extraordinary steps to ensure that your memories will never be lost.”

Another thing I liked is that the service is free and it seems to be unlimited.  1000memories is an official partner of the Internet Archive, the non-profit dedicated to preserving digital history.  They are the official digital archive of the Library of Congress as well as eight other national institutions and 1000memories is their only commercial partner.   They let you make unlimited copies of memory page content to store offline.  They have an easy-to-use data export feature that lets you download your shoebox at a click of a button, then save copies wherever you’d like.

Their mission is to provide a safe place for your memories so that they can be passed down to future generations.  That is as close to a permanent space for your memories that you’ll ever find.

From the homepage http://1000memories.com/register create an account and sign up, it’s free!  There are no limits, you can upload as many photos, audio clips, stories, and documents as you want.  Imagine all of your relatives scanning in all of the family photos, death certificates, funeral programs, military records, journals, etc. and placing it all in one place so that everyone could have access.  Then you could link it back to that person in an online pedigree chart to bring your ancestors to life.
