Genealogy Corner… New Year’s Resolutions

Issue 3.12

There are many genealogy related New Year’s resolutions that we can set.  It may be that you just need some help to get started.  Here are some ideas.

There is no time like the present to start documenting your family’s genealogy. However, many adult children needlessly postpone logging valuable information and then regret they didn’t ask more about their family history after losing a parent. There is a local, St. George firm, precioustimesofyourlife.com, consisting of interviewers and producers of family documentaries to help you secure all your valuable history on CD. The service isn’t what one might call inexpensive, but you’ll be impressed with the professional-grade end product and, after all, after the parent has passed on, won’t their memories be priceless? Find this company’s info at precioustimesofyourlife.com.

Document your family history with sources.  In the last quarter of 2011, FamilySearch.org surpassed Ancestry.com as the largest online provider of genealogical records.  They already had the world’s largest collection, but now these records are going online at a rate of 300,000 million records per year.  Ancestry.com adds between 40 and 50 million records per year.  If you haven’t looked at these sources lately, there is bound to be something new for you to find.  Visit https://www.familysearch.org/ and search for your family.

If you are one of those who just want to help, volunteer to help index at https://indexing.familysearch.org/ an army of volunteers from around the world is now helping to save and make these records available.  Using the online system, you can easily extract data from valuable records and provide free searchable indexes – all from the convenience of your own home.  This is an exciting year to become involved because on April 2, 2012, the 1940 U.S. Census will be released and the monumental task of indexing it will begin.

Perhaps you just want to do some family home evenings on family history.  You can contact Lin Floyd, another columnist at The Senior Sampler and get a copy of her Family Home Evenings for Empty Nesters and Singles where she has included several pages of finding your roots ideas.  Contact Lin at lin@sunrivertoday.com.
