Many hearing aids, especially older models, are equipped with omni-directional microphones, which pick up sounds all around the hearing aid wearer. Consequently, undesirable sounds are amplified about the same as desirable sounds, and this can make conversation in a noisy place very difficult.
Directional microphones, on the other hand, amplify sounds coming from in front of you (for example, the voice of your dining partner) more than sounds coming from the sides or behind you.
