Spring Cleaning Wood Work

Issue 17.12

I know, add one more thing to the Spring to do list.  Chances are it’s been on your list for a while; you’re just not sure how to go about it.

Cleaning woodwork is simple and quick.  It is most commonly neglected because no one knows exactly what to use on wood.  There are so many choices at the store, it’s confusing.  A recent experience at a local store applies to this and to most of our everyday shopping experiences.  I was in the middle of what must be 10 aisles of  fishing lures, baits, tackle, gear galore, I believe I was somewhere close to heaven.  An older gentleman was there and saw me inspecting every lure, plotting my attack, knowing I was gonna get just the right one to catch that monster for my wall…if I could squeeze it into my tackle box with so many other winners!  He said “Ya know two or three simple lures catch fish, the rest of this stuff catches fisherman.”

How many products do you need to clean wood?  You only need a couple at best.   Restoration products, waxes, etc. often carry a consequence of what you can use next or limit your ability to refinish later.  They can absorb differently and appear blotchy, or may even need buffed.  Most of these products should not be used to clean and maintain the woodwork in your home.   Simple is always best!  Don’t be the fisherman on the hook.  I’m going out on a stable limb and saying that for 95% of the wood in your home can be cleaned with products already under your kitchen sink.

Dish soap and warm water.   Get a soft cloth damp, wipe the cabinets, do not excessively scrub and immediately follow with a dry cloth.   Don’t get them too wet, and always wipe them dry; done.  This method will not hurt your wood.  If your wood feels unsealed you may need the finish renewed.  If you don’t get the results you want, consult a professional for products that may help.
