Issue 28.12

Do you want to see something really great, and free that will help you with your family history work almost instantly?  Go to https://familysearch.org and click on Learn, up at the top right by the FamilySearch logo.  Then click Discussion Forums.

This takes you to FamilySearch Forums where you can find people who will voluntarily help you with your family history research.  It allows beginners, intermediates and experts to find answers and help from other experienced FamilySearch users.  Anybody can read the forums but to post questions or answers you will need to register and/or sign in with your FamilySearch or LDS FamilySearch Account.

Once there, you can ask questions about how to find ancestors or questions about records.  I was looking for the Arbitration Ten Commandments so I searched for commandments and one thread (Thread: a group of messages or postings to a newsgroup, mailing list or Internet forum on a single topic) came up titled Dudley Leavitt’s place of death, which caught my attention.  The original person who posted the query said, “Does anyone know where Dudley Leavitt (husband of Thirza Riding) died?”

Then there were two replies.  The first one said, “I am assuming since you posted this under the state of Utah that the Dudley Leavitt you are interested in either died or lived in the state of Utah.
There are two death certificates on line:
1. Dudley Leavitt Jr. born 13 December 1856 and died 21 February 1931. His usual residence is listed as Littlefield, Arizona. He was apparently treated in Salt Lake City, Utah where he died in the LDS Hospital. According to the death certificate he was buried in Bunkerville, Nevada. This particular Dudley Leavitt was a widow and the name of the wife that is listed was a Mary Elizabeth Leavitt. Perhaps Thirza is a nickname for Elizabeth.
2. Dudley Edgar Leavitt born 18 November 1879 and died 27 Feb 1958. His usual residence is listed as Mesquite, Clark, Nevada. He was apparently treated in St. George, Washington, Utah where he died in the Dixie Pioneer Memorial Hospital. According to death certificate he was buried in Mesquite City Cemetery in Mesquite, Clark, Nevada. His spouse is listed as a Bertha Hafen.
If you would like to look at either of these certificates go to http://archives.state.ut.us/cgi-bin/indexes.cgi and click on the name of the individual whose certificate you would like to see. When the next page appears click on the small image and the original will appear.
