Honoring Your Loved One With Cremation

Issue 29.12

When considering the options available for the final disposition of your loved one or yourself, it should be remembered that these decisions are very personal and there are no right or wrong choices.  Cremation is a wonderful option for many and is growing in popularity.

Once you have chosen cremation, the next important decision is how best to honor a life well lived.  Every life lived has significance and value to those around them.   It is important for family members and friends to be able to remember their loved one with a service.  Services can be simple or elaborate, religious or secular, traditional or contemporary.  Each service should be designed to honor the deceased, and provide a healthy healing process for those left behind.  When you choose cremation you have many options available to you.   Before the cremation takes place many choose to have a visitation followed by a funeral just as in a traditional burial.  While others have found a memorial service without the body present can provide a meaningful experience.

Cremated remains can be buried in a cemetery or placed in a niche to provide a permanent place for families and friends to gather and pay tribute.  They can be kept at home in a unique urn, or they can be divided among loved ones in a keepsake size memento, or in cremation jewelry. Scattering the remains in a favorite location is always a popular choice.
