Cremation Questions And Answers

Issue 34.12

Many people have questions concerning cremation.  As the owner of the Cremation Center of Southern Utah, I hear these questions on a regular basis.  From cost to the process itself, individuals want to be informed about the decisions they make for themselves and for their loved ones.  This article will address a few of the questions I hear most often.

Q:  How much does it cost to be cremated?

A: Different people want different things; therefore, cremations range in price.  Some people want direct cremation, or the absolute minimum required for disposition of a body.  Our fee for direct cremation is $795.  Other options include holding memorial services, funeral services, and visitations, both public and private.  There are many options available.  Other variables that influence price are the number of death certificates, selection of urns, obituaries, and flowers.    Beware of cremation pricing listed in advertisements, as most often these prices will not be all-inclusive.

Q:  Do I have to be embalmed before I am cremated?

A:  Not usually.  Utah law states that within twenty-four (24) hours of death a body must be embalmed, buried, cremated, or refrigerated.  Refrigeration of the body allows time for any of the other options to occur.  Embalming is required prior to cremation only when a public visitation is planned.

Q:  How can I be assured that I receive the correct remains?

A:  The Cremation Center of Southern Utah utilizes a unique identification and tracking system to ensure accuracy throughout the entire cremation process.  This step-by-step system incorporates a uniquely numbered identification medallion that remains with the body and the cremated remains.  For those who wish to be more involved, we offer the use of a witness room.  This allows family members to be present when the cremation occurs, providing first-hand knowledge that cremation is performed properly.
