Genealogy Corner… Family Tree Replacing New FamilySearch

Issue 38.12

Part 1

Family Tree is a new application found at www.familysearch.org and it will eventually replace new.familysearch.org.  As a user you will be able to do many new things.  Please remember that when you enter your user name and password, enter the same user name and password that you use on familysearch.org and new.familysearch.org. This lets you see your tree and changes in both new.familysearch.org and Family Tree.

Once you gain access, the Family Tree link is located right next to the FamilySearch logo at the top of the page at www.familysearch.org.  Hint: You need to be signed in!

When the FamilySearch Family Tree appears, you are in the main position on the screen.  When you see your family information on Family Tree, you (and your spouse, if applicable) should be in the primary position (in the center of the screen).  When you first display a person’s Family Tree, you may not see all of the information that the system contains about that family line. You can display more generations if the system contains them.

The Summary card is a useful navigation tool that you can use in many places throughout Family Tree. It lists basic facts about a person. You can also use it to put a person in the main position of Family Tree and view the person’s details page.  In Family Tree, you can see information about a person in two ways:

Summary card. This lists a summary of the most important pieces of information about the person.

Details page. This lists all of the information available for the person.

A person’s Details page shows a person’s family, including the person as a child with his or her parents and the person as a spouse with his or her children. From the Family Members section of a person’s details page, you can see, add, edit, and delete a couple’s marriage information.  If someone is in there married to the wrong person, you no longer have to fret or contact support, you just fix it.  You can also add missing spouses, parents, or children. You can also remove incorrect family members.

From a person’s details page, you can display a couple’s marriage information, such as the marriage date and place. From there, you can add or correct information about the couple.  The marriage date and place appears in the box that shows the names of each couple.

To see more information about the marriage, click the View link that appears in the box that shows the couple and their marriage information.  From a person’s details page, you can display information about his or her parent-child relationships. This information includes the relationship type, which indicates whether the relationship was biological, step, adopted, and so forth.

In Family Tree, you add and correct information about people and the relationships that connect them into families.  As you add or edit information, you follow a general process in which you enter the most accurate information that you have, explain how you arrived at this information, and upload the sources that you used to obtain the information.
