Genealogy Corner… 70 Million Free Indexed Records

Issue 44.12

FamilySearch has added more than 70 million indexed genealogy records to the free www.FamilySearch.org Historical Records collection over the past couple of weeks.  These indexed records come from the United States and 20 other countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean.  Updated or new United States records from more than 20 states, plus New England passenger lists.

It is really getting fun to research because it seems like we can always find something new!  You can access FamilySearch.org’s indexed records by using the search boxes on the FamilySearch.org home page (which will give you results from all the indexed records on FamilySearch.org) or by searching a specific collection.  I recently used the Texas death records to update family with actual death dates and link the death certificates right to the person in the FamilySearch Family Tree.

You can find the search page for a specific collection by using the place filters on FamilySearch.org.  Scroll down until you see the world map and click on a world region, then choose a country, date range or collection on the left to narrow the collection list to those covering your ancestor’s lifetime.  Then click on the title for the collection you want to search.

If you have Italian ancestors you will be happy to find more than 8.3 million new browsable images of civil registrations and church records from Italy were also added.  They aren’t yet indexed so you will need to find the collection and then browse the records.  And if you can ready Italian you can help with the indexing at indexing.familysearch.org.

FamilySearch is the largest genealogy organization in the world. FamilySearch is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Millions of people use FamilySearch records, resources, and services to learn more about their family history. To help in this great pursuit, FamilySearch and its predecessors have been actively gathering, preserving, and sharing genealogical records worldwide for over 100 years. Patrons may access FamilySearch services and resources for free at FamilySearch.org or through more than 4,600 family history centers in 132 countries, including the main Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.
