Genealogy Corner… It’s Not Just Your Family Tree – It’s The Family Tree

Issue 45.12

At 10:00 p.m. Halloween night, FamilySearch turned on Family Tree for users of new.familysearch.org.  Family Tree is the new application that is replacing new.familysearch.org.  It is found at www.familysearch.org once you sign in.

Combining and uncombining in New.FamilySearch was turned off.  Family Tree is a limited functioning program and new features are continually being added.  For example, the printing of Family Group sheets, bringing in notes and sources from New.FamilySearch and the ability to sign in to help someone else.

The reason Family Tree is limited to New.FamilySearch users is to see the impact on the servers of more users logging on.  If the servers function properly, the program will be opened worldwide.  No timeframe for this has been set but it is hoped it will be sooner rather than later as many people have been waiting to gain access to this program which was limited to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Others can gain access if they go through the invitation link at this time.

The Help Center and the Reference Guide is continually being updated, so it would benefit everyone to keep checking for updates and learning from the videos, tutorials, and handouts available there.  Some of the updates still coming will be adding pictures and images to our ancestors.

This data is the same as that found at new.familysearch.org but it is easier to correct and you can add sources.  It does not make the relationship corrections in new.familysearch.org and the information in New.FamilySearch will increasingly become outdated.  For this reason, it is recommended that you focus your work on Family Tree and transition away from using new.familysearch.org.

After working with Family Tree for the past 14 months beta testing, I have become a great fan of this program.  It is easy to use, we can finally make the needed changes to correct the pedigrees and misinformation that has been confounded during the many years of insufficient genealogy software programs.  I encourage everyone to sign in, add your relatives to bridge the gap to the deceased and correct the errors with evidence you have and improve the data.
