Genealogy Corner… Getting Current Data From A Website

Issue 50.12

As FamilySearch moves everything to the internet, it becomes increasing important to use a current web browser. Using a recent release of Firefox or Chrome avoids the compatibility issues that exist between IE 8 and IE 9. (These problems are especially evident when using the Captcha security text to register or recover a forgotten user name or password.) Older browsers and uncommon browsers can cause you no end of perplexing problems.

Mac users might want to also install the Mac versions of Firefox and Chrome to be on the safe side. These are free programs don’t take up much space. You don’t need to set one of them as your default browser, just have them available to use. I don’t recommend downloading the other “free offers”
when downloading the browser software.

Regularly deleting the temporary internet files (browser cache) will make sure that you are downloading the current version of the page from the internet rather than pulling up an old copy of the page from your hard drive. To avoid headaches, set your browser to *delete the temporary internet files* at the end of each browsing session.  You can also use the Refresh Your Cache for more details: http://www.refreshyourcache.com/en/cache/

Some of you will remember that many were still seeing the “FamilySearch is down for maintenance” page a week or two after the maintenance was over. This is because that page was stored on the user’s hard disk and every time they went to https://familysearch.org, their browser loaded the
old page from the hard disk instead of loading the new page from the internet, and they could go no further.

Many times when pages do not display properly, a forced reload of the page will often solve the problem.  You can press the F5 key on your keyboard.  If that doesn’t work, try different browser software.  If all of this went swoosh right over your head, you should probably get expert help to make sure your computer is running efficiently.  My “IT guy” son-in-law Brian Burningham will be glad to help.
