Proper Care For Hardwood Floors

Issue 6.13

The beautiful hardwood floors you have make a lovely addition to your home. Unlike a decoration in your house, painting, or a mirror; hardwood floors are exactly what they say they are… a floor. Not made to just be looked at and admired, floors will be stepped on with muddy shoes, walked on with oily feet and scuffed by work shoes. As lovely as your hardwood floors are, they go through a lot of dirtying and require constant care and cleaning to keep them looking beautiful. Daily cleaning is advised to keep your floors looking bright and vibrant. The basic cleaning methods are most effective when done routinely.

• Sweeping: be sure to use a soft bristled broom when sweeping hardwood floors. Rough brooms have the potential to scratch the floor.

• Dusting: dust easily accumulates on hardwood floors. Using a dust mop each day may be a little work but it gives your floor the shine that you are looking for in hardwood floors.

• Vacuuming: on hardwood floors it’s important to use the soft brush attachment. This is the best way to get rid of dirt, especially between cracks and crevices.

Add Floor Mats and Rugs: by placing a floor mat in entryways and encouraging family and guests to wipe their feet, the majority of the dirt and grime will remain on the mat. Put a floor mat or rug in any area where water could be splashed; for example near the kitchen sink.  Floor Mat Warning: rubber-backed or non-ventilated floor mats or rugs can damage your floor. Instead use floor mats or rugs made especially for hardwood floors.

Cover Furniture and Table Legs with flannel protectors.

Shade:  Wood becomes faded and aged by sunlight.  Minimize this by using window coverings to protect your floor from direct sunlight.  Rearrange rugs and furniture often, allowing your floor to “age” evenly from light.

Clean Under the Furniture: You should never skip out on cleaning under furniture. Dust, dirt, and grit can hide in the hard to reach places and come back to damage your floors.
