Geek Speak… Can I Still Get Windows 7?

Issue 11.13

The answer is Yes, but “it ain’t easy”, as they say. If you go to the technology stores and even to places like Wal-Mart, all you seem to be able to find are computers with Windows 8. Microsoft is making a concerted effort to force everyone to move to their new Operating System (OS) even in the face of a lot of criticism of how hard it is for people to learn. Much of the user accessibility has been removed which makes it hard to delete programs, check your systems well-being and generally feel like you can control your own computer.

There are ways to get Windows 7 computers and you can even have a professional build you a Windows XP computer if it is needed, but I don’t recommend it in a new computer unless it is to run specific business programs or hardware that are not compatible with the newer systems. If you just need a second computer or mostly use your computer for email and checking the internet, a used or reconditioned XP machine is still viable and usually fairly inexpensive.

That leaves Windows 7 or making a big switch to the more expensive Apple (MacIntosh) systems or the inexpensive but limited Linux systems. Either of those requires a fairly steep learning curve to learn to use well which makes Windows 7 still a good choice, especially for those who don’t want to make big changes in what they do on the computer.

Windows 7 computers are still available through special order from some manufacturers such as Dell and HP, but it may be difficult to get through to someone who will help you with ordering it. In some cases you can buy a Windows 8 computer and then “downgrade” it by installing Windows 7 instead, but then you are buying two operating systems which increase the cost. Some of the newer systems will not accept Windows 7 so be careful. Even if you buy it pre-installed, it usually will cost you somewhat more than the same model because of Microsoft policies.

The best way if you can’t find one easily is to have a specialist help you order what you want. Dealers like me have access to company representatives and can help you get what you want or get it for you. In addition, you can often find used XP or Vista or 7 computers by talking with specialists or checking the classifieds. I have a number of refurbished computers and know others that have some as well that I can steer you to if you need help. In any case, it is still possible to get what you will feel comfortable with, and remember, always back up anything important to you.
