Geek Speak… Can Your Computer Do More?

Issue 16.13

I am continually surprised by customers who have technology they have paid for but are not using. Usually it is because they have not taken the time to know what their computer can do, but often they think it is automatically going to do it without them taking the time to activate the options available.

A good example is regular backups of their data. Often they think that, if they bought an external hard drive and plugged it in, it is automatically backing up their important data, pictures, etc. This is usually not true. Once you install the external drive, there is software to install and then you have to set up a regular time for it to do the backups and in many cases you need to specify what you want it to back up. The default for most is that it will back up your user files including pictures, documents, music and possibly emails (depending on which program you use). It usually won’t backup additional users (if you have them) or any data or items stored outside your user folder. Most backup programs will allow you to customize your backup to include things like financial data (such as Quicken or Quick books) which may be stored in the folder the program resides in. If you also have picture files in other locations (such as Kodak, Nikon, etc.) you will need to specify that you want those included.

Another thing I often see is people who have purchased a wireless router and hooked up to it without activating the security measures. It is a process and sometimes even needs a tech to set it up. However, using a wireless network without security is kind of like putting your stereo system outside. It’s nice to have the music play while you do the yard work, but there are people who will come up while you are not looking or away and take your stuff. If you have an unsecured network, they can join your network easily and use it for illegal purposes which you may be blamed for. Skilled hackers can also access your information through an unprotected network.

There are often programs or options available to you that require a little work on your part to access, but which are fun or valuable to have. E-Print is a new feature on many HP printers where you can print out pictures or documents from anywhere or have friends send you documents that print out at your home. There is a sign up process and you have to know the email address and code for your printer (or share it with those you trust) but it is pretty cool to share what you are doing or seeing with those at home.

Look through your programs and read the install booklets with the peripherals you purchase. You may get more than you thought with a little extra effort – and remember to always back up anything that is important to you.
