Genealogy Corner… Let’s Fix That Family Tree – Part 3

Issue 20.13

Part 3

It is time to look at your family tree.  https://familysearch.org/tree/  Because it is a consolidation of multiple record repositories, there are many data issues.  The best practices can better help you successfully navigate the Family Tree.  First, learn how to use the program.  Click on Help in the upper right hand corner of the webpage and on the Ask a Question page, under Family Tree, click on See all Family Tree training materials (manuals, videos, etc.) This will give you a good, basic understanding of the program and what it can do.

Family Tree is all about collaboration.  Collaboration enables us as we do our genealogy. When we work with others, we can share what we know, ask for help, and learn from each other.  And as a bonus, we meet new people and in the end, together we accomplish so much more.  In Family Tree there is a change history associated with each person.  This is found in the person’s detail under the tool box.  Changes made by other patrons can be restored using this feature.  It also helps if you make a mistake.  It’s like “undo.”

Each time you make a change, Family Tree will prompt you with a reason box.  This reason box gives you opportunity to write notes indicating why your information is correct.

Sourcing is an important part of genealogy.  In Family Tree it allows us to create conclusions and stop family myths.  Whenever possible add sources.  Sources can be added from a person’s detail page.  From the source section, you can create a new source or go to your Source Box.  Source Box is the function Family Tree uses to help you manage all of your sources in one place.  The Source Box is also connected with familysearch.org and the records that are found on that site.  You can also access your Source Box from anywhere in familysearch.org.  In the upper right corner is your name and a drop down arrow.  In that menu, is a link to Source Box.
