Genealogy Corner… Let’s Fix That Family Tree – Part 4

Issue 21.13

Part 4

It is time to look at your family tree.  https://familysearch.org/tree/  Because it is a consolidation of multiple record repositories, there are many data issues.  The best practices can better help you successfully navigate the Family Tree.  First, learn how to use the program.  Click on Help in the upper right hand corner of the webpage and on the Ask a Question page, under Family Tree, click on See all Family Tree training materials (manuals, videos, etc.) This will give you a good, basic understanding of the program and what it can do.

Family Tree has the ability for you to watch certain ancestors.  If you spend the time to clean up an ancestor, you may want to click the watch and then you will be informed of any changes.  When you “watch” a record, you will be notified by email if someone makes a change to that record.  You can “watch” a record from two places.  From the pedigree, a watch link is in the summary card for each person and in the person details a watch link is in the upper right corner next to history.  This feature came over from new FamilySearch but in Family Tree there is also a Watch List.  This lets you see all the records you are watching in a list.  You can “unwatch” a record at any time from either your watch list or the person’s summary card or details page.

Even if you don’t make a change to an ancestor, you may want to put a “watch” on your end-of-line ancestors to see if anyone makes any changes or additions.  You will be notified if they add sources as well.

Each person also had a section for discussions.  It’s at the bottom of the person’s details.  This is an important collaboration tool and may help you to find other family enthusiasts.  One important thing for us to do is go to https://www.familysearch.org/ and Sign In.  Accounts are free.  Then once you are signed in, hover over your name and click Settings.  Check your Contact Information.  Make sure the Contact Name is what you want others to see.  Make sure you have shared something so other can contact you, I chose my email address.  This is also where you find you Contact Name and Helper Number for others to be able to sign in to help you.
